Our Club | Oxford University Squash Rackets Club

With around 100 members, ranging from complete beginners at the Sunday social training sessions to internationally competitive players at the very top of the Blues squads, there is a place in OUSRC for all levels of experience and commitment.

OUSRC has four teams (two men’s and two women’s) that compete over the course of Michaelmas and Hilary term against other universities in the national BUCS leagues, as well as in a varied private fixture list. The competitive highlight of the squash calendar is definitely the Varsity Match against the University of Cambridge, which sees some fantastic squash being played during the day, and a great celebration to mark the occasion in the evening. For the Blues, Varsity is played at the RAC in London. For the 2s, it alternates between Oxford and Cambridge every year.

The 2s squads (nicknamed the ‘Squirrels’ on the men’s side and ‘Ferrets’ on the women’s) usually have 10-15 players who come to regular training a couple of times a week. A handful of these players step up to play a match (depending on their availability), either at home or away, most Wednesdays during term. The Blues (1s) benefit from smaller squads and more frequent training, and play a number of private clubs, such as The Queen’s Club and the Armed Forces, as well as other universities. Almost all squad members play in the Varsity Matches in Hilary term, giving about 40 Oxford squash players the opportunity to compete in what is usually a really close and exciting match!

Outside of the squads, the social membership is an ideal way to pick up squash as a beginner, or to keep up your game without committing to the training schedule; the club organises a weekly coached session which is always popular, and the squash ladder provides a great opportunity to get some more match-play experience and meet other players from across the university.
